SICAP Community Development

About

Community development is at the core of what we do. Our Community Development team works under Goal 1 of SICAP and aims to empower communities to identify and respond to their own needs. We work with community groups and the wider community in our key areas of Ballinfoile, Ballybane and Wesstide, with community workers based in each of those areas.

Key Supports

We help community groups by:

Supporting you with grant applications and returns
Supporting you to deliver classes or run activities
Supporting your group to connect with other groups, networks and relevant agencies

We help the wider community in our key areas by:

Providing free regular activities in these areas
Creating opportunities for you to engage in your community and join a local community group

Social Enterprise Development

About

A social enterprise is a business or organization that aims to solve social, environmental, or community problems through commercial strategies. Unlike traditional businesses that focus mainly on maximizing profit, social enterprises prioritise creating positive social impact while also generating income to sustain their operations.

Key Supports

We provide supports to new and existing social enterprises including:

One-to–one mentoring support for start-up and growing your social enterprise
Training especially designated for social enterprises
Limited grants for specific funding needs
Networking opportunities for social enterprises
Resources on best practices for social enterprises

Let’s Get Galway Growing

About

Launched in 2023 with funding from the HSE and SICAP, supported by Galway City Partnership, Let’s Get Galway Growing is a collaborative network of seven community gardens—six public and one private—across Galway City.

The network promotes growth and connection by facilitating the exchange of information, skills, and resources. Its core focus includes climate action and sustainability, strengthening community engagement, and fostering solidarity through shared learning and capacity building.

Healthy Food Made Easy

About

HFME is a six-week course designed to promote healthy eating habits through practical, hands-on learning. Each session typically lasts between 2 to 2.5 hours and combines nutrition education with cooking demonstrations. Participants engage in group discussions, cookery sessions, and activities that focus on making affordable, nutritious meals. The programme is tailored to be accessible and enjoyable, encouraging participants to apply what they learn in their daily lives.

Key Supports

Galway City Partnership runs between 5 and 6 HFME courses across the city each year.
